When I read this poem, I could picture my childhood. I really connected with this part:
His own parents, he that had father'd him and she that had conceiv'd
him in her womb and birth'd him,
They gave this child more of themselves than that,
They gave him afterward every day, they became part of him.
I feel my parents are a part of me. I feel Whitman is trying to say that a child's parents do more for them than they will ever know. I feel my parents have done so much for me that I do not even realize. My dad always tells me about his childhood. I learn from his experiences and use them to create my own experiences. My mom says she can see herself in me. She acts and dresses how I do when she was a child. I feel my parents are a great part of my life. They have formed me to be my own person.
Thank you for these heartfelt connections.
